Opera Tour in Riga
The foundation stone of the Riga Opera House was laid in 1860, and already three years later the building designed by L. Bonschtet opened its first season. After its reconstruction in 1995 it has become one of the most beautiful opera houses in Europe. The luxurious interior and the high artistic level of the Latvian opera and ballet stars make a visit to a performance a highly memorable experience.
The creative force behind the Project was architect Imants Jākobsons whose work later was continued by architect Juris Gertmanis. The reconstruction and restoration – which included the front of the house with the auditorium, the foyers, coat rooms, and the staircases – and the refurbishment of the stage began in 1990 and lasted five years during which the house was closed. The number of seats was reduced from 1200 to 933. The LNO re-opened in 1995.
In 2001 the old building was accompanied by a new-built annex modelled in forms of contemporary architecture. The new annex provided wanting space for technical and artistic staff as well as the New Hall with 300 seats.
There is a unique possibility to visit the backstage of the Opera House – a unique architectural masterpiece of the 19th century. The guides will lead you through the interior of the building and talk about the life and times of the opera. For additional cost it is possible to have a private opera performance. The Latvian National Opera is a perfect for a themed gala dinner which can be organised just on the stage.
